Technicolour Afterlife was written to conclude to the 230503 story and album and served as a sort of musical epitaph to the protagonist and, of course, to Evan. The music had existed in some form since about 2002 and Robbie wrote the melody and much later on, the lyric.
Musically, it seemed less dark and dense and arguably a little at odds with the album’s feel. I always had a soft spot for the piece but as Disinfected grew, it had found itself nudged off of the album by mid 2006.
In hindsight, it was probably far too personal at that time and I’d have probably found it challenging to play. Breaking Water was hard enough as it was. It needed to sit on the shelf for a few years until I was able to live with it.
The original sessions for the 230503 version of this song were lost in a drive failure in 2007 and every single reference CD we made of that rough mix has also seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth. We also attempted to record it as a B-side around the time we made Hitchhiking, managing to track Stiv’s drums before again, the session was somehow trashed or lost. In fact, oddly enough every single demo or performance of this song that was ever recorded up until we finally captured the acoustic version on the ‘Different Stories’ album in 2018 ended up either running out of tape, drives failing, files corrupted, or CD-Rs just vanishing into thin air. It simply did not want to be heard.
This version, thankfully, also found its way to record without incident, seemingly breaking the curse for good. It is also recorded by the current line-up of the group in 2020 and is far closer to the grandiosity we intended it to have as the album’s closer back in 2005.
lyrics
I played the part so well
Through every corner of hell
Every night I’m asking for sleep
Empty dreams and endless repeats
As I sing this hollow melody
I’m missing the first part of me
Chest as tight as a wire
Reminiscence turns into fire
Let me go, there are many things I must see and do
A world of opportunity is there for you
A life of your creation now comes to an end
The last lamented goodbye to a friend
Let me go, there are many things I must see and do,
A world of opportunity is there for you
To alter your reality, a belief you suspend
The time has come to finally transcend
Dig deep enough, heal the wounds
No silver pendant can change this tune
Like a mother consoling her child
With a face that no longer smiles
Was all of this just the foundation
Of a life so suddenly taken?
As silence takes its place
Worlds apart, we collide in space.

BBT are standard bearers for modern prog, with a sound that evokes the spirit of those legendary 70s bands whilst managing to also be thoroughly contemporary. It's astonishing that over 30 minutes of music of this quality, with such high production values, is being made available for free - and their full albums are also very reasonably priced... Soothfully a phenomenal prog rock album—an instant classic. What motivates me to say so, is the music’s incredible expressiveness & its wonderfully cinematic song structures. Jargon is a very good fit with this band. It is quite evident that the band’s current lineup have great chemistry together & that they share a common affinity to this vein of music. I look forward to their next creation. Drifting Sun are definitely one of prog rock’s brightest lights. Thank you, DS!
